Zimbabwe: I Am Rejuvenating Party - Nyanhongo

19 November 2008

Harare — ZANU-PF Harare South legislator Cde Hubert Nyanhongo has vowed to continue carrying out party activities despite being served with a prohibition order by the Harare provincial leadership last week.

Addressing a Press conference in Harare yesterday, Cde Nyanhongo said his activities were meant to rejuvenate the ruling party in Harare Province.

The Zanu-PF provincial leadership chaired by Cde Amos Midzi has barred Cde Nyanhongo, National Incomes and Pricing Commission chairman Cde Godwills Masimirembwa and other party members from carrying out any party activities following an altercation over the upcoming provincial elections.

Cde Nyanhongo and Cde Midzi's supporters clashed at the provincial offices last week, damaging property and leaving some people injured.

The two are vying for the post of provincial chairman.

Yesterday, Cde Nyanhongo branded the prohibition order a "propaganda paper" being used by Cde Midzi and Cde Christopher Chigumba to bar him from campaigning in the province.

"No one has authority to stop us from re-organising the party. We shall continue going to the people, re-organising the party and encouraging people to come up with proper party structures. We want to see party structures being properly done," he said.

Cde Nyanhongo, who is Zanu-PF's only legislator in Harare, bemoaned the lack of proper party structures in the province.

"As long as we are living, we will make sure that there are party structures in Harare and that they are done in a proper and acceptable manner. (Cdes) Midzi and Chigumba should not victimise key people who are organising the party in the province by giving them prohibition orders which are of no legal basis," said Cde Nyanhongo.

Cde Masimirembwa said so far, over 300 people have been served with prohibition orders.

"These prohibition orders are all defective and therefore are of no legal consequences because they do not provide the date and venue of the hearing of the case by the appropriate disciplinary organ," he said.

"Any member of the Party against whom disciplinary action is intended to be taken shall first be issued with a prohibition order and notice of charges in writing, for a period not exceeding 14 days in respect of the branch and district and 21 days in respect of the province.

"The notice of the charges shall state the charges of the date and venue of the hearing of the case by the appropriate disciplinary organ.

"The notice shall also inform the member being charged of his constitutional rights under Article 10 Section 69," reads Article 10 Section 74 (1) of Zanu-PF's Constitution.

Cde Masimirembwa said the suspension would not stop them from carrying out party activities.

Yesterday, Cde David Karimanzira, who oversees the restructuring process in Harare, confirmed that Cde Nyanhongo and Cde Masimirembwa had submitted written reports.

"They wrote a letter but it is being addressed by the commissariat," he said.

Political Commissar Cde Elliot Manyika yesterday said he has not yet received a report from the province on the matter.

"I have not yet got a report from the province on the matter but it is an internal disciplinary issue that the party has to deal with."
