South Africa: Lanes Closed On Melville, Upfill Roads in Hyde Park

Nthambeleni Gabara

19 November 2008

Johannesburg — Johannesburg motorists have been warned of lane closures along Melville and Upfill Roads in Hyde Park at the end of November until August next year.

The lanes will be closed to create the necessary space to allow the Gautrain construction team to safely establish a site and carry out the excavation for Emergency Shaft 6.

Bombela Concession Company spokesperson, Kelebogile Machaka said the Melville Road northbound lane will be closed between Harries and Upfill Roads, while the westbound lane on Upfill Road will be closed from the Melville Road and Upfill Road intersection for 25 metres.

Traffic lights will be implemented to control traffic using the stop-go traffic management system.

"Traffic lanes on these portions of Melville and Upfill Roads will be reduced to single lanes. Access to residents and pedestrians will be maintained at all times," she said.

She urged motorists, pedestrians and residents to be aware of the construction activities and take necessary precaution.

In Pretoria, the Willow Road bridge was demolished due to its current height restriction, with traffic permanently being diverted to a new bridge.

This forms part of work towards the construction of a series of overpass bridges along the Gautrain alignment towards the Pretoria city centre.

An overpass bridge is also being built at Ridge Road in Muckleneuk which will serve as a link between Normaal Street and Elandspoort Road, as well as Elandspoort Road and Ridge Road.

As a result, the intersection of Elandspoort Road and Ridge Road was upgraded into a four way stop while Preller Street will be permanently closed at the intersection with Willow Road.

A portion of West Street in Centurion has been temporarily closed to make way for construction on the Gautrain viaduct, or concrete bridge.

The closure, to allow sufficient working space for the Bombela construction team, was implemented between Lenchen Avenue and Gerhard Street on 1 November. The road will only be reopened in April 2009.

On Friday, the Gautrain shareholders, Strategic Partners Group (SPG) and Bombardier Transportation will officially launch their new company, Isithimela Rail Services.

The launch will be highlighting the role that Isithimela Rail Services, a fully empowered company, plays in the track work aspect of the Gautrain project.

During the launch, relevant expertise and technology for Gautrain's track work will also be introduced.
