Akure — The National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN is to upgrade its Akure study centre to an International study centre as an alternate to Lagos study centre.

Vice chancellor of NOUN, Professor Olugbenro Jegede who disclosed this to newsmen in Akure during the opening ceremony of a one-week nation-wide computer awareness programme for counsellors of the institution, noted that the centre would be equipped with modern information technology equipment.

Jegede said the institution would within the next few years be an e-varsity with its new programme of on-line-registration, on-line-admission, on-line-tutorial and on-line-examination.

He said each of the centres would be provided with the necessary computer materials and equipment for the full implementation of the programme.

Ondo state governor, who was represented by the deputy governor, Oluwateru Omolade disclosed that the state government had spent about N500million on computer equipment and N1million on training of its staff on computer .

He lauded the institution e-varsity environment programmes saying the computer awareness programme of the institution would go along way to ease student study programme.

Jegede, who also debunked the rumour that the institution has scrapped its Nursing course programme noted that the miss-understanding of the management position on the Nursing programme stemmed from those who wanted to put the institution into disrepute.

The Institution, he said, has not scrapped its nursing course of study because it widely consulted with the nursing council before starting the programme in the varsity.

The Nursing council, he said, also agreed with the institution's programme but that difference arose on certain requirement for practising nurses admitted through post-nursing -registered degree/diploma for degree programmes.

These set of students; the university, he said exempted them from some basic requirement of chemistry, biology and physics as requirement for admission but that the nursing council wanted it as compulsory for admission for the students.

He said while the arsity agreed to exempt the students because of the basic knowledge acquired, the same privilege was not granted those admitted through pre-nursing registration, that is those who had no knowledge of nursing courses before they were admitted to study nursing .

The University, he said, has its own admission requirement after due consultation with other institution taking nursing as a course of study and would not compromise its admission policy for any selfish interest.
