Ghana: The New Buses - a Welcome Addition, But...

250 buses have been commissioned as part of a Fleet Renewal Project between the Government of Ghana and the private sector. (Please see story on business page). The buses are expected to promote an efficient and a safe transportation system that would enhance the capacity of doing business in Ghana and beyond.

President Kufuor, who did the commissioning, said the introduction of the buses to the sector would help change the face of transportation in the country.

And that really is the issue: changing the face of transportation in the country, which so far has been most unreliable, uncomfortable, unsafe and uneconomical.

Transport owners, even including sometimes, the state sector carrier, do not give a damn about the comfort and safety of passengers. They do not run on time and their employees can be very rude and unpleasant to passengers.

It is good to have new buses introduced into the system, but it must not end there; it must go with the other systems to complete the renewal.

By this we mean the construction of comfortable bus termini, stop-over termini, introduction of modern ticketing systems that do not stress the traveler and so on.

When these are done, the many people who are compelled to travel in their own cars due to the inefficiency and discomfort of the public transport system would flock back. We welcome these new buses and eagerly await the overhaul of the entire system.
