German Embassy

19 November 2008

Accra — The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Accra is funding a project to digitise, archive, and safeguard the Gramophone Library of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.

The embassy is providing the financial and professional contribution to this very extensive and important archive mainly consisting of but not limited to local music.

The project, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, is being coordinated by the German anthropologist and ethnomusicologist Dr. Markus Coester who will work at GBC until April 2010.

The "Gram Library", as the Library is also referred to, is one of the largest collections of recorded music in the whole of Africa and has not been accessible for broadcasting and as reference library for more than two decades due to technological change, especially the fast change to digital media.

The project will also include training of GBC staff to further their qualifications in the technology and management of large audio collections and databases.
