South Africa: Banyana Through to Semis

19 November 2008

Banyana Banyana are through to the semifinals of the African Women's Championships being played in Equitorial Guinea.

The South African ladies registered a 1-0 victory over Ghana's Black Queens, giving them maximum points after two games.

Banyana, who beat Tunisia in their first match, are now set to meet their nemeses, Nigeria's Super Falcons, in the last match of the group stage.

Even if Banyana lose there is no chance that they can be overtaken by Ghana, who drew with Nigeria in their opening game and now have only one point, while Tunisia - on no points - are not a threat either.

The Nigeria v Tunisia match has still to be played, and Ghana, three times runners-up in this competition, can only progress to the semifinal stage of the competition if Tunisia causes a major upset by beating the Super Falcons.

Banyana's second victory came courtesy of a 22nd-minute volley by Veronica Phewa.

South Africa thoroughly deserved the victory, holding off Ghana at the back, defending brilliantly and creating numerous chances that should have given them a bigger victory.

They struck the bar once but were mostly denied by some brilliant goalkeeping from Ghana's Memunatu Suleiman.
