Nigeria/Tunisia: Falcons Held By Tunisia

19 November 2008

After escaping defeat against Ghana's Black Queens over the weekend, Nigeria's Super Falcons were given a second shock after being held 0-0 by Tunisia in the on-going African Women Championships.

The result means South Africa, who had beaten the North Africans in their opening game, and Ghana earlier in the day, will top the group irrespective of their result against Nigeria this weekend.

The Super Falcons came into the game knowing that only a win would be good enough for the fans after the disappointment of only clawing out a draw against Ghana.

But a combination of errant passing and poor finishing contrived to deny them of the goal they desperately sought.

The Tunisians, having held their own for the better part of the game, threatened on occasion and looked dangerous on their rare forays forward.

In the end though, it finished 0-0 and the Falcons will now need to beat Banyana Banyana on Saturday to assure qualification to the next round.

That is by no means guaranteed, as the results at this AWC seem to indicate that the Falcons may have lost their invincibility.
