Kickoff (Cape Town)

Ghana: Banyana Down Black Queens

19 November 2008

Ghana's chances of progress into the semifinals of the African Women's Championships were dealt a massive blow with defeat at the hands of South Africa in Bata.

Banyana Banyana followed up their victory from the opening day against Tunisia with 1 -0 triumph courtesy Veronica Phewa's 22nd minute volley that now puts them firmly in the front seat for a place in the last four.

South Africa thoroughly deserved the victory too, holding off Ghana at the back, defending brilliantly and creating numerous chances that should have given them a bigger victory.

They struck the bar once but were mostly denied by some brilliant goalkeeping from Ghana's Memunatu Suleiman.

Ghana can still qualify for the next stage of the competition depending on the outcome of the Nigeria v Tunisia game but the three-time runner ups are at a distinct disadvantage with South Africa on maximum points.
