The charge preferred against the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Mr Timi Alaibe before the Code of Conduct Bureau in Abuja over alleged failure to declare his assets has been described as a failed attempt to rubbish the integrity of a gentleman of repute.
In a statement signed by Mr Alaibe's special assistant, Iniruo and issued in Abuja yesterday, he said Alaibe was a stickler to everything lawful and constitutional and therefore has never failed to declare his assets as a matter of duty.
The statement reads: "Our attention has been drawn to the media hype over alleged non-declaration of asset by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Mr. Timi Alaibe.
"We observed that a text message emanating from some people has been circulated to all media houses in the country and to every journalist on this falsehood.
"The message indicates that Alaibe has not declared his assets and would be tried by the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
"This looks like a script mischievously conceived and acted upon by certain individuals with dishonest motives.
"It is an attempt to rubbish the integrity of an otherwise innocent person. We find this unacceptable!
"Let it be stated here that since he was appointed into the NDDC, Alaibe has never failed to declare his assets.
"This is because such an act is statutorily obligatory and without doing so, he would not only have breached the 1999 Constitution, he would have been refused confirmation by the Senate.
"It is a known fact that part of the document for Senate confirmation are the security clearance, police finger print clearance and completion of asset declaration form sworn to at the High Court.
"We have evidence of all such declarations, especially the receipt from Code of Conduct Bureau.
"The authors of this rumour should know that besides declaring his assets in 2005 as Executive Director, Finance and Administration, he re-declared his assets before he was confirmed in 2007 by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, when he was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
"It is therefore mere mischief for anyone to associate Alaibe with non-declaration of assets.
"This statement serves to set the records straight."
