Nigeria: PDP Leaders' Forum Seeks Party Unity

20 November 2008

Abia — Abia Leaders Forum yesterday took a look at developments within the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and declared that the party must go back to the basics.

A statement signed by Onyebuchibeya Osondu called on party faithfuls to retrace their steps and pay more attention to the founders of the party in the state with a view to solving the seeming intractable problems facing the party which had resulted in unnecessary litigations in addition to repositioning the party to be able to win future polls.

The earlier the step is taken, it said, the better positioned the party would be to win in the event that the Court of Appeal gives a nod for a re-run of the controversial Abia gubernatorial election. The forum took a swipe at some party members it accused of distracting the attention of the party in the state.

"Can those derailing our dear Ugochukwu and holding him hostage not to align with the stark realities around him; can his non-vote winning chieftains pause for a while to ask themselves the following pertinent questions: Where are the big names which made Abia PDP tick in not too distant past?

"Where are the Ukasanyas, Maduekwes, Abaribes, Apugos, Wabaras, Macebuhs, Majahs, Atumas, Alfredo Awas, Ogbulafors, Sampson Ojis etcetera. Are they sincerely with him (Ugochukwu) especially in his CARE organisation?

"Where are those men that fought Orji Kalu to a standstill and forced their Reality Organisation out of PDP," it asked.

If the Appellate Court orders a by election or a re-run today, how prepared and united are we to go the whole hug again with the menace of this group taking into cognisance that none of them won up to 10 votes for our flag-bearer in their respective booths in the April 14,2007 election?",it queried.

The forum maintained that sincere answers to the above posers would be the recipe for peace and future victories for the PDP in Abia State.

"As a last line, we need to restate that discussing the issue of Chief Alfredo Awah's illegal suspension will be subjudice and we will not succumb to the temptation of doing so", the Forum said.
