Uganda: Parking Meters Installed

Kampala — MULTIPLEX has installed parking meters in order to improve services and contribute towards modernisation of the city.

The meters were installed at Parliament, Kimathi, Portal and Nile avenues, Apollo Kaggwa Road and Colville Street.

The project is to be implemented in phases starting with the pilot, which has already commenced.

Multiplex's finance director Eldard Kasiime said the parking meters had led to improved revenue collection in other cities around the world.

With a parking meter, a motorist pays immediately after parking using cash, a smart card or any other authorised mode of payment, obtains a receipt for the period he/she wishes to park and displays it on the dash board of the car as evidence of payment.

In 2006, Multiplex in partnership with Kampala City Council commissioned a study, which recommended installation of the parking meters.

Kasiime said customers no longer have to waste time waiting for an attendant to clear them. "When you are ready to leave, you just drive away."
