Kampala — ORGANISATIONS dealing in child rights protection have expressed concern over the rate at which children are dropping out of school in Kasese district.

This was noted on Monday at a meeting in the district.

Several organisations complained about the scrap metal business, saying it was affecting the children's right to education.

The chairman of the Kasese district mediators association, Asumani Mwesigye, said several children had dropped out of school especially in urban centres to search for scrap.

The head teacher of Rukoki Model Primary School, Jowanina Baguma , said her school had lost hinges and locks to thieves.

The school is the only one in the district for children with disabilities.

Baguma asked the district administration and other development agencies to assist the school construct dormitories.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Mines Network Rwenzori has warned the public against the landmines that are still planted in several parts of the district after the Allied Democratic Force insurgency.

Joshua Mwaru, an AMNET-R programme officer, warned that with the scrap metal business on the increase, children need to be sensitised to avoid touching metallic devices that they are not familiar with.
