THE Khomas Regional Council yesterday rolled into the Mix Camp settlement, 20 km north of Windhoek, to deliver maize meal, tinned fish and cooking oil as food aid to 174 families there.

The visit marked the start of the council's Drought Relief distribution programme which is set to run until April next year, and is expected to benefit 20 rural settlements in the region over that period.

Other areas set to benefit include farming settlements Arovlei, Nauaspoort, Groot Aub, Verdruk, Stinkwater and Dordabis.

The council continues with the distribution today, with consignments expected to be delivered to 32 households at the Naos and Areb settlements.

In total, 1 071 households are to receive aid by next Thursday during the first phase of the programme.

Khomas Governor Sophia Shaningwa escorted her distribution team yesterday.

Shaningwa said the beneficiaries of the aid had been identified beforehand as elderly and disabled people, breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women, and vulnerable parents with children below the age of five.

Each household is to receive three bags of maize meal, two bottles of cooking oil and four tins of fish a month.

The Mix Camp settlement is currently inhabited by about 3 000 people.

Many of those who live on the Mix farm are employed at parastatals, businesses and other farms in the Brakwater area.
