20 November 2008

THE justice system worked swiftly in the Swakopmund Magistrate's Court yesterday, when a Walvis Bay fisherman was convicted and sentenced to a four-year prison term only a month after a bloody attack in which he stabbed his girlfriend more than a dozen times with a knife.

Seaman Lukas Kamoya (34) was arrested at Henties Bay on October 17, following an attack on his girlfriend, Cecilia Kalimbo, in which she was stabbed 15 times with a knife.

She survived the attack, and Kamoya was charged with attempted murder.

His trial ended in the Swakopmund Magistrate's Court yesterday with Magistrate Hannelie Prinsloo finding him guilty and sentencing him to a four-year jail term.

During the trial, Kamoya admitted that he stabbed Kalimbo.

He however claimed that this was done in self-defence.

According to Kamoya, he and Kalimbo were still in a relationship at the time of the incident.

According to her, their relationship had ended before that.

The court heard that on the evening before the incident, Kamoya phoned her, but a man answered her phone.

The next day, Kamoya drove from Walvis Bay to Henties Bay, where she lived.

He went to her house, where he stood waiting at the door, listening what was going on inside the house, until a male guest who had been inside left.

Kamoya then went inside, where he confronted Kalimbo.

The confrontation took a bloody turn when he launched an attack on her with a knife, stabbing her in her head, neck, chest and other parts of her body.

Despite receiving several injuries, she managed to flee to safety.

Kamoya stood trial without legal representation.

The prosecution was conducted by Public Prosecutor Brumilda Britz.
