Botswana: DR Tlou Receives American Nursing Honour

Former Minister of Health, Dr Sheila Tlou has been honoured with the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) 2008 Presidential Award.

The Award was established to recognise individuals for their dedication to promoting quality care in nursing. The AAN board of directors says Tlou has demonstrated a sincere personal and professional desire to improve the safety and quality of patient care on a global front. The award was presented at the academy's meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, United States of America, November 7 2008 where she made a presentation.

Tlou is an executive member of the International AIDS Society and she chairs the ethics committee of the Global Fund.

In 2002, she was appointed by the then Secretary General of the United Nations as Eminent Person to a special UN Task Force on girls, women and HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa.

At regional level, as chairperson of SADC Ministers of Health in 2005, Honourable Tlou provided leadership in the adoption of the SADC malaria eradication programme and the SADC HIV/AIDS plan of action.

From 2005 to 2007, she was a member of the board of the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, representing Eastern and Southern Africa and she was instrumental in lobbying for continued inclusion of small island states and middle income countries such as Botswana and South Africa on the list of fund recipients.Honourable Tlou continues to be part of the World Health Organisation gender advisory panel, and was one of the UNICEF 'Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS' campaigners, delivering keynote addresses at the Abuja HIV/AIDS conference and at the United Nations in New York.
