Maputo — Mozambique's ruling Frelimo Party has swept to victory in Wednesday's municipal elections in its traditional strongholds in the south of the country, with majorities that in some cases are well over 80 per cent of the vote.
Thus, according to Radio Mozambique, the results from 36 of the 47 polling stations in the city of Inhambane have guaranteed a further term of office for the current mayor, Lourenco Macul, with almost 14 times as many votes as his challenger from the main opposition party, Renamo. The Party for Peace, Democracy and Development (PDD).came a very poor third.
The details from these 36 stations were as follows:
Lourenco Macul (Frelimo) 11,279 Francisco Manuel (Renamo) 807 Ernesto Tsambe (PDD) 230
The results in the election for the Inhambane municipal assembly from these same stations was:
Frelimo: 10,170 Renamo 778 PDD 196 PT (Labour Party: 140
In Chibuto, in the neighbouring province of Gaza, Frelimo won an even more crushing victory. With results in from all 33 polling stations, the results in the election for mayor were as follows:
Francisco Mandlate (Frelimo): 16,531 Pedro Pelembe (Renamo) 246
In the election for the Chibuto municipal assembly, the result was:
Frelimo: 16,386 Renamo: 179
There was a similar result in Chokwe, also in Gaza, where current mayor Jorge Macuacua had no difficulty had no difficulty winning another term. The results in the mayoral elections, from 34 out of the 35 polling stations, were:
Jorge Macuacua (Frelimo): 15,472 Julio Cuna (Renamo) 414
The result for the Chokwe municipal assembly from the same 34 stations was:
Frelimo: 15,245 Renamo: 398
All these results were taken by radio reporters from the results sheets ("editais") fixed on the polling station walls, and will only become official when validated by the National Elections Commission (CNE)
