Maputo — With all 13 polling stations counted, Mozambique's main opposition party, Renamo, has lost control of the small town of Marromeu, on the south bank of the Zambezi river.
In the last local elections, in 2003, the result in Marromeu was as close as possible. The Renamo candidate, Joao Agostinho Germano, was elected mayor by the margin of just one vote.
In the election for the municipal assembly in 2003, the ruling Frelimo Party won a narrow victory, with just 17 votes more than Renamo. So for the past five years a Renamo mayor had to share power with a Frelimo majority in the municipal assembly.
That is now over, and Frelimo has won both elections. According to Radio Mozambique, the results from the mayoral election were:
Palmeirim Rubemo (Frelimo): 4,072 Joao Germano (Renamo): 3,267.
For the municipal assembly, the results were:
Frelimo: 4,435 Renamo: 3,235
The results are also in for all 38 polling stations in the town of Dondo, in Sofala province, and the current mayor, and Frelimo candidate, Manuel Cambezo, has won a further term of office.
The results of the mayoral election, the Radio announced, are:
Manuel Cambezo (Frelimo): 12,185 Manuel Bissopo (Renamo): 6,027
