19 November 2008

Ministry of health and the African development bank, ADB, in collaboration with UNFPA donated large consignments of drugs valued at millions of Leones to the Bo, Kenema government hospitals and peripheral health units.

Dr. Prince Roberts, strengthen district health services project coordinator who presented the donations said the gesture came from the ADB, adding that the drugs were meant for maternal and child health care in Bo district with a view to reducing the high incidence of maternal and child mortality in the country.

He said other targeted districts include Bonthe, Kenema, Port Loko and Tonkolili.

Dr. Roberts warned the district health management team to utilize the drugs judiciously adding that any malpractice would tantamount to legal action and culprits would face the law.

He said: "Apart from the drugs, other components in the project include rehabilitation of the hospital maternity wards, provision of ambulance, training and staff capacity building and the procurement of motor bikes and bicycles for the peripheral health units."

Receiving the donation, Bo town district council chairman Matthew Mannah Magao said health care delivery service was a serious challenge to both developed and developing countries, describing the gesture as an invaluable medical treasure that would be used to benefit the district.

Deputy chairman Kenema town council Luseni Sheriff underscored the importance of the drugs and advocated for a stronger partnership between the district health management team and the council.

He lauded the donors for donating the drugs.
