Harare — HUNDREDS of sports enthusiasts from in and around Harare are expected to converge at Zimbabwe Grounds in the high-density suburb of Highfield on Saturday for the inaugural Summer Sports Festival.

The Summer Sports Festival is the brainchild of the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee and is aimed at promoting a culture of sport and physical exercise among the communities.

Stanley Mutoya, the ZOC general manager, yesterday said participants would take part in six sporting disciplines -- soccer, basketball, volleyball, athletics, netball and aerobics.

"Members of the community are invited not just to watch the games but to actively take part in the activities.

"The festival is unique in that it does not place emphasis on competition but on awareness, creation and physical involvement by all the participants.

"The event is open to everyone, the young and elderly, including women and people with disabilities.

"In fact, in the spirit of the Olympic Movement, Saturday's event is also aimed at promoting Olympism and Olympic Education," Mutoya said.

He said the Summer Sports Festival, which is scheduled to start at 8am ending at 2pm, was also designed as a coaching clinic for the six sporting disciplines on offer.

Respected top national coaches, such as football's Nelson Matongorere and the 30 coaches who are currently attending a Level II soccer coaching course at Allan Wilson, have been invited to conduct the coaching clinics.

Veteran coach Matongorere was recently appointed by Zifa as their acting technical director with a mandate to spearhead the association's development programmes.

And his expertise in football will be used by ZOC during the festival at Zimbabwe Grounds.

"In other disciplines, we have national coaches such as volleyball's Artwell Gororo, who has recently returned from the United States where he was attending a top level coaching course under the Olympic Solidarity scholarship for coaches programme, who will be in attendance," Mutoya said.

The police and military bands, Kuwadzana Gymnastics Group and drum majorettes will provide entertainment during Saturday's event.
