Sokoto — Compensation for victims of the flood disaster in Shagari Local Govern-ment Area of Sokoto State will gulp N800m, Special Adviser on Ecological and Relief Matters, Dr.Kulu Abubakar disclosed yesterday at a news conference in Sokoto.
She said as part of the admi-nistration's efforts to suppress hardship on victims of natural disasters, the state government had liaised with the Islamic Re-lief Organisation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to source more donations to flood victims at Gangan, Kambana and Lambara in Shagari.
She said N41.2m was appro-ved by the state government for the procurement of assorted relief materials and grains to victims of the last flood in eight local government areas inclu-ding Shagari, Wamakko, Tambu-wal, Sokoto South, Silame, Goronyo, Binji, Tureta and Illela. Dr. Abubakar added that the department processed and distributed relief/rehabilitation funds worth N22.3m as state go-vernment assistance to victims of fire and other disasters.
In order to manage and safe-guard against possible flood and erosion problems in all the 23 local government areas of the state, the Special Adviser said N23m contract was awarded to a consulting firm, 'Brothers Ac-cross the Ocean' to conduct fea-sibility studies on ecological problems of all the councils in the state.
She added that as part of the department's efforts to control, prevent and manage all forms of disasters in the state, a first aid emergency booklet had been produced to serve as en-lightenment on various forms of disasters and how to manage such disasters.
According to her, the depart-ment has concluded a study of some state emergency manage-ment agencies to convert the Sokoto State emergency unit into a full fledged management agency.
