Africa: «Africa Com» Conference Underway in South Africa - The event brings together mobile, fixed, wireless and satellite communications professionals.

The 11th annual conference of mobile, fixed, wireless and satellite communications professionals opened yesterday at the International Convention Centre in Cape Town, South Africa. The event which comprises seminars and exhibitions is to show case the latest developments in telecommunications technology.

In a keynote address at the opening session of the conference, the Qualcomm executive vice president for Asia, Middle East and Africa said the event was exciting because of the 'increasingly large role that wireless voice and data services in connecting the many underserved communities across the continent.

Over 3500 delegates are taking part in the conference which comprises 80 seminars, 75 exhibition content and 200 exhibitors. The Africa Com conference is the premier Pan African telecoms event which is part of the Com World Series.

Prominent among the many presentations at the event were presentations from officials of one of the major sponsors of the event, Ericsson.

The first presentation given by the director for sales support, market unit in sub Saharan Africa, Aingharan Kanagaratnam, was titled, looking at future network evolution: the opportunities of HSPA and LTE.

The other presented by the director for media accounts at Ericsson, Jason Lobel was titled "Are you my televionary: shifting the way people watch television with any service, using any device.

Ericsson has been active in Africa since it started providing fixed-line infrastructure in the 1890s. Today, it is a leading supplier of telecommunications equipment to mobile and fixed network operators in the sub-Saharan Africa.

Ericsson covers some 43 African countries with a combined population of 650 million people and counts close to 65 mobile and over 20 fixed-ope3rators in sub-Saharan Africa as customers, and has more than 50 per cent market share in the GSM space. Its activities span from infrastructure to value added services.

The objective of the company is to establish a leading role in emerging mobile datacoms market, by driving third generation mobile networks, which will put the internet within the reach of many Africans for the first time.
