Liberia: PACA On Poverty and Corruption Campaign

19 November 2008

A pro democracy group that has been at the full front of social justice in the country for the past five years has embarked on a two-phase campaign intended to redeem the vast majority from hardship.

At a news conference in Monrovia recently, the Patriotic Consciousness of Liberia (PACA) says it has concluded steps strong enough to engage the government constructively in fighting corruption as well as to explain to the citizens the benefits of the government Poverty Reduction Strategic (PRS).

PACA Chairman, Frederick Baye, in a statement said the wave of corruption reports in the media by citizens of over seven (7) counties has claimed the attention of his group, and called on the government to probe the countless numbers of corruption reports.

PACA is urging the government to listen to the cries of citizens who are raising alarms on alleged corruptions by their respective leaders.

He said the issue of corruption in the concerned counties should not be overlooked by the government; as such it needed to set-up a special task force comprising of professional auditors to audit county superintendents, especially officials linked to corrupt practices.

Besides, Baye said, PACA has begun massive preparations to explain the Poverty Reduction Strategic to the people. He stated that the ordinary citizens needed to be educated on the total meaning and benefits of the PRS and approach in reducing poverty.

The PACA boss said his organization has communicated with the Minister of Finance, Augustine Ngafuan to address the public session in New Kru Town.

New Kru Town is a slum community that hosts over 50,000 people on the out sketch of Monrovia, Liberian capitol city.
