Lagos — Over 120,000 vehicles are currently plying Lagos roads with expired licences, the state Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) has disclosed.

It, however, warned that the full weight of the law would be brought against offenders.

The agency maintained that there was no justification for the development, since the state government has made vehicle document renewal easy, through automation in the 38 licensing offices and about 500 branches of various banks across the state.

According to the Permanent Secretary of MVAA, Akin Hanson, the state government is resolved to ensure that no motorist ply the roads in the state without valid vehicle particulars, stressing that " it is a gross violation of the traffic regulations for motorists to drive without licences".

He, however, advised motorists not to wait until the police or the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) confront them on the motorways before renewing their expired documents.

With the various access centres created in the state, Hanson maintained it is now possible for motorists to renew their documents in their neighbourhood within ten minutes.

He stated that the working hours of the licensing offices have been extended to 5.00 p.m. daily, till the end of the year.

As the festive periods approach, the MVAA boss cautioned motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition and certified road worthy, before embarking on their various journeys.
