Freetown — An elder of Banana Island Sunday told Concord Times that the present status of the community was very bad and would need a central government intervention.
Pa Molai Turay said the whole area doesn't have proper schools, community center, electricity or security. He said that any time there is any problem on the Island, they have to travel to Kent and request for police help. "We really want the government to focus on the wellbeing of the people on the Island." Turay said.
Another elder Pa Hassan Koroma said the Island has a population of about 200 people but only a single primary school could be spotted on the Island.
Pa Koroma said: "60 children attend the primary school with fewer facilities and there is no junior or senior secondary school." adding that they need a secondary school so that their children would be opportune to have secondary education on the Island.
"Many children stop schooling after primary education because their families do not have money to send them to schools out side the island," he lamented.
Banana Island includes two main islands, Dublin and Ricketts and Mes-Meheux, which is uninhabited.
A parent Alpha Kanu said education was a big problem in that area. "We need assistance from the government and other stake holders," Kanu said, adding that their community is very poor community.
