Nigeria: Senator Cautions Colleagues Over 2009 Budget

Maiduguri — Former governor of Yobe State, Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim (ANPP, Yobe East) has cautioned committee chairmen in the National Assembly not to manipulate the 2009 budget as they did in the 2008 budget.

Ibrahim said the lawmakers should put the Nigerian public at heart while making input in the budget, expected to be presented soon to the National Assembly by President Umaru Yar'adua.

Ibrahim told Daily Trust that the 2008 budget was not for the public because it merely contained interests of chairmen of committees in the Senate and the House of Representatives.

He said because the budget 2008 was doctored, the president returned it to the Assembly and the two chambers found it nearly impossible to harmonize.

Ibrahim said the 2008 budget was not meant to make meaningful impact on the lives of Nigerians, and that unless there is a change of attitude on the part of the executive and the leadership of the National Assembly, successive budgets would hardly be different.
