The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cameroon, His Excellency Beng'Yela Augustine Gang, has presented his letters of credence to Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. At a ceremony Thursday at the President's Foreign Ministry office, the Liberian leader extolled the long standing ties between Liberia and Cameroon, dating back to the late 50s when the Prime Minister of Cameroon visited Liberia followed by a return in 1962.
Liberia, the President said, looks forward to the enhancement of the strong bond of friendship between the two countries and requested the new Cameroonian ambassador to extend her best wishes to President Paul Biya, according to an Executive Mansion release.
In remarks during the occasion, Ambassador Gang extended warmest felicitations on behalf of President Biya to his Liberian counterpart and recalled Liberia's role in Cameroon's independence. Liberia, the Cameroonian diplomat noted, was the first country to recognize his country's independence.
Ambassador Gang promised to exert all efforts to help strengthen the longstanding relationship between Cameroon and Liberia. The Cameroonian diplomat expressed optimism in the future of the country and said he was happy to be in Liberia to share in the spirit of transformation under the leadership of President Johnson Sirleaf.
Ambassador Gang welcomed the Liberian President's call for cooperation in the sectors of agriculture and education and promised to communicate with his country the President's interest as a basis for practical cooperation. Liberia's efforts in self-sufficiency in food production, the new Cameroonian ambassador pointed out, could be bolstered by collaboration with Cameroon as his country shares its experiences and expertise, with emphasis on teaching French in Liberian schools beginning at the primary level.
Foreign Minister Olubanke King-Akerele accompanied Ambassador Gang to the office of the President for the ceremony, also witnessed by the Assistant Minister for
Afro-Asian Affairs, Mr. George Wisner, and Liberia's Chief of Protocol, Ambassador Edward Dunn.
