Kampala — THE Kyenjojo-Kagadi road has been cut off following the submerging of the bridge on River Muzizi in western Uganda. The floods, that started on Sunday, are caused by heavy rains.

The bridge was blocked by papyrus carried by the river's waters. Last year, the river flooded and it took three months before the water subsided.

The officer in charge of Kagadi Police Station, Jonathan Kihika, has advised travellers from Hoima to Fort Portal to use the Karuguuza-Hapuyo-Kyegegwa road.

However, the LC1 chairman of Karalike in Muhorro sub-county, which borders the river, Francis Besige, said some bus operators still used the route, putting lives of passengers at risk.

Matia Musoke, a transport officer in Kibaale district, said taxis from Kagadi to Fort Portal move for 15km up to the bridge where they drop off the passengers to cross using canoes.

An engineer from the works ministry, Godfrey Magara, said plans to reconstruct the bridge were underway.
