Kampala — THE People's Progressive Party (PPP) candidate for Kyadondo North, Ssentamu Ssewandagi, has distanced himself from the party boss, Jaberi Bidandi Ssali.
"It is not Bidandi Ssali contesting for the seat. It is me, Ssewandagi. My stand on federalism is well known. I have even written a book called "Federo Essuubi Ly'enkulakulana" (Federalism, the hope for development)," Ssentamu said on Wednesday while addressing a rally at Kawanda.
He challenged his opponents to mention what they had done for the Buganda Kingdom.
"On top of the book I have written on federalism, I am an executive member of Buganda's Civic Education Committee which has been sensitising the Baganda about the land Bill. I am a regular panelist on Mambo Bado Kimeeza, where I ably advocate and promote Buganda's cause," Ssentamu said amidst ululations from his supporters.
He also said of all the contestants, he was the most experienced in politics and debating.
"I am a district councillor and a public debater. None of competitors reaches my debating ability. This makes me the best candidate since the prime role of an MP is to debate," Ssentamu said.
He promised to use part of his salary to sponsor 16 people on the university mature entry scheme every year.
"I also joined Makerere University on mature entrance. It was a serious struggle to get there but the benefits are several. That is why I will be committed to encouraging and promoting adult education in my constituency," he said.
He said he moved out of the NRM to oppose a third term for President Yoweri Museveni.
He added that he would represent the constituency for only two terms and then contest for Wakiso district chairperson. He also said he would contest for the presidency in 2021.
He promised to use the constituency fund and part of his salary to start development projects. Ssewandagi, who said he had zero tolerance to corruption, vowed to fight the vice.
