Uganda: Ssebaana Asks Govt to Repossess Railways

Kampala — DEMOCRATIC Party president, Ssebaana Kizito has asked the Government to repossess the management of railway transport from the Rift Valley Railways (RVR).

"It appears RVR is incapable or it doesn't know what to do. I don't think they are serious investors. Let government take over control.

Governments of East Africa should have economic rather than political integration.

"They should resurrect the East African Railways Corporation that we used to have during the East African Community days. During that time, they were able to make profits because of economies of scale," Ssebaana said.

He was one of the nine Ugandan representatives to the former East African Legislative Assembly from 1967 to 1977.

Apart from reducing the load on the Jinja bridge, he said, the railway would also lower costs of doing business.

Ssebaana said DP was helping the Byanyima family in burial arrangements for Gertrude Byanyima, the wife of the former DP chairman, Boniface Byanyima. She died last Thursday.

As head of the DP women wing during Dr. Kawanga Ssemogerere's leadership, Gertrude recruited many women into leadership, he said.

Ssebaana also lashed out at the Government for allowing petroleum companies to flourish without regulation, a practice.

"We appeal to the Government to rein in and ensure availability and affordability of this essential commodity. Some of these companies are hoarding fuel in the hope of selling it at higher prices later. In the past we had only five petroleum companies and the Government had shares in some of them but now we have over 30."

On the Kyadondo North parliamentary by-election, Ssebaana said despite the closure of voter registration, the Electoral Commission had continued to insert names of Special Police Constables.

He said the constables would be deployed to vote on election day in the guise of monitoring security.
