Kampala — THE DVD of the play, Butterflies of Uganda, has been launched.
World Vision Uganda launched it under the theme Yesterday is gone but tomorrow is full of hope.
The play was written by Darin Dahms and Soenke Weiss. It is about the memoirs of Mary, a mother haunted by her past and her daughter, Mercy, who was abducted from her home in northern Uganda and forced to fight as a child soldier with the Lord's Resistance Army.
It introduces the world where children are raped and exposed to AK-47 rifles. "For Uganda to understand how important peace is, we need to be reminded of our past, especially the northern Uganda conflict so that when we get peace, we can jealously guard it," says Bettina Baesch, the programme officer.
The play is intended to give children a voice, advocate against the use of child soldiers and campaign for the end of the war. In Los Angeles, US, where the play was first staged, it was selected among the best 10 plays in 2007.
It was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize as well as six awards of the US National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People.
