Uganda: Display Officer Arrested Over Voters Cards

Kampala — THE Police on Wednesday arrested an Electoral Commission official for possessing 44 voters cards.

Badru Kiggundu, the chairman of the commission, condemned the act, saying it was unlawful.

"We condemn the incident because it contravenes section 26 and 28 of the Electoral Commission Act," Kiggundu said.

"Semakula Wasswa, a display officer, who was also in charge of distributing voters' cards in Nakyesanja parish, Nabweru sub-county in Kyadondo North, signed for more than 44 voters' cards under the pretext that he would pass them onto the respective owners.

"He instead kept them at his house," Charles Ochola, the public relations officer of the commission, said.

The Kyadondo seat fell vacant after the death of state minister Kibirige Sebunya.

"Voters cards are personalised cards which bear the owner's picture and bio-data and should only be issued to the bonafide owners," Kiggundu said.

The display of voters' registers ended on Tuesday.

Lists of persons recommended for deletion from the voters' register are being displayed at all polling stations for crosschecking from Wednesday to Sunday.

"We have had cases where people maliciously declare others as being underage or dead yet it is not true," Ochola said.
