Nigeria: ICPC Arrests Ondo LG Official

21 November 2008

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) yesterday said it has arrested the chairman of Ondo State Local Government Service Commission for allegedly planting syndicates in all local council areas of the state.

ICPC's Resident Consultant, Folu Olamiti, in a statement said the suspect was in the custody of the anti-graft agency over the offence.

"The suspect, who has been occupying the position since 2003 is alleged to be using his own council (Ondo West) as a focal point in the perpetuation of the fraudulent act.

"He is also accused of planting collaborators and stooges in all the councils' treasury departments across the state, using them to effect the inclusion of ghost workers on the pay roll of the councils with their salaries and entitlements diverted into private accounts of the chairman and his collaborators," the statement read.

The statement added that the official was alleged to have amassed property worth over N203 million from the proceeds of his alleged fraudulent activities.
