Nigeria: Congo - Group Lauds UN Over Obasanjo

20 November 2008

Abuja — A group, African Network for Peace, Progress and Development (ANPPD), has commended the recent effort of the United Nations (UN) in appointing former president Olusegun Obasanjo to head the new peace initiative as special envoy to Congo.

National coordinator of the group, Prince Elias Odoemena in Kumasi Ghana said that the only currency used in settling war and other disturbance is peace .

He pleaded with the people of Congo to embrace peace now that the United Nations had appointed Chief Obasanjo as the mediator. He said Obasanjo can do extra-ordinary things in an ordinary way as the envoy. Prince Odoemena maintained that the only tonic needed for the speedy development of Africa is peace and finance, saying no meaningful development can spring up in a situation where there is war and disorder.

He promised that his group will give Chief Obasanjo full support as its own contribution and called on the serving head of states, and ex-head of states to give Obasanjo the full support and attention he may need, stressing that the success of the Congo peace initiatives will go a long way to prove that Africa is a peace loving continent.
