Nigeria: IG Cup - Stage Set for Round of 16 Draws

21 November 2008

The knockout draws for the I.G Cup, are expected to hold today in Lagos, with 16 teams set to discover their foes, for a place in the quarterfinal of the competition, being organised in honour of Mike Okiro, the Inspector General of the Nigerian Police Force.

After the kickoff of preliminary matches last weekend in Benin, which saw the Edo Police Command side beating its Delta rivals 3-0 in an interesting opener to the tournament in its first year, other teams, were involved in matches which saw some losing, drawing while the brave ones won, for the chance to represent their zones in the knockout round.

First to hit the round of 16 was Edo team, who were so dominant in its zonal preliminaries, where it mastered the art of beating oppositions that came it way and signal its title aspirations. With strong support coming from newly sworn-in Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who charged the team to go for glory, today's draw would hold much significance for the Edo team.

Also in the pool for today's draw is Lagos, parading a glut of ambitious players, eager to prove that they are from the Centre of Excellence and not just for show in the tournament. By all account, Lagos progress from its zonal command did not come easy, as it had to dig deep to outwit other contenders for the direct qualifying ticket to the round of 16 draw.
