Mozambique: Frelimo Coasts to Victory in Maputo

21 November 2008

Maputo — As expected, David Simango, Mozambique's Minister of Youth and Sport, and the candidate of the ruling Frelimo Party for mayor of Maputo, has won an overwhelming victory in Wednesday's municipal elections.

With results in from 94.6 per cent of the Maputo polling stations, Simango had 85.7 per cent of all valid votes, and his sole opponent, Eduardo Namburete, of the former rebel movement Renamo, had only 14.3 per cent.

In the last local elections in Maputo, in 2003, Frelimo took 75.2 per cent of the vote and Renamo 12 per cent. But in 2003, there were three other candidates for mayor, one of whom, Philippe Gagnaux, head of the independent citizens' group Juntos pela Cidade (JPC - Together for the City) won almost ten per cent.

The result from the vast majority of polling stations, as announced by the Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE) on Thursday night, was:

David Simango (Frelimo): 200,553 Eduardo Namburete (Renamo): 33,472

Results for the election for the 67 seats in the Maputo municipal assembly have not yet been announced. But from the polling station results sheets which AIM reporters have seen, there is a distinct possibility that the JPC slate may come second, beating Renamo into third place.
