Ghana: Country, Liberia Strengthen Security Ties

The Liberian Minister of Defence Mr. Browine Samukai has commended Ghana's military officers on peace keeping mission in Liberia for their good work in making the country a peaceful one. He said, "They have shown professionalism and have proven to be a tremendous benefit to Liberia".

He made these remarks when he met with Ghana's Defence Minister Mr. Kan Dapaah in Accra.

Mr. Browine Samukai said there is a "large and vibrant Ghanaian community in Liberia. This he said is due to the fact that Ghanaians and Liberians have a very good relationship. "I therefore wish this relationship is kept whole", he said.

Mr. Albert Kan Dapaah, Minister of Defence said there has been a heavy investment in the Ghana Armed Forces and assured his Liberian counterpart that Ghana will continue to help Liberians develop their Armed Forces too.

"Our doors are always open and hope Ghana-Liberia relationship will be strengthened.

The Liberian Minister paid a courtesy call on the President John Agyekum Kufour at the Castle where he praised the President for the support he rendered to Liberia in its time of crises.

President Kufour said he hoped the two countries will continue to be of help to each other.

The Liberian Defence Minister also called at the Interior Ministry where he met with the sector Minister Dr. Kwame Addo Kufour.

Dr. Addo Kufour said, "Ghana is very proud to be associated with the peace keeping in Liberia". He revealed that 17,000 Liberians are currently staying at the Budumburam camp and are not under any pressure to leave. "Those who have left did so on their own will", he said.

Dr. Kufour said facilities of Ghana's Military, Police, and the Prison Service are open to Liberian security services.

Mr. Samukai toured the Armed Forces Base and the new Ministry of Defence Complex and the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

He was accompanied by Mr. Rudolf Ballmoos, the Liberian Ambassador to Ghana, Major General Abdul Rahman, the Liberian Chief of Staff and Lieutenant Colonel D. K. Moore, Garrison Commander.
