Mr. Justice Martin Abban, Chairman of the Builder's Club (BC) has asked presidential candidates to guard the peace of the nation for the sake of children and the aged who are usually most affected when there is violence.
He said, "we have held elections since 1992, I do not know why Ghanaians are so obsessed with violence as we go to the polls...it would be most unfair to extend electoral violence to innocent people like our children, the aged and people with disabilities out there, let's ensure that the impending general elections will be violence-free, politicians must advise their supporters against violence."
Mr. Abban made the appeal when the Builder's Club donated assorted items totaling GH¢ 4, 500 to inmates of the CountrySide Orphanage Home at Awutu Bawjiase in the Central Region.
He said the donation is part of the Club's social responsibility. "It is our social responsibility to reach out to the under privileged in society, we have to be a blessing to those who do not have, especially as Christmas approaches."
He explained that "the Club is making this donation to support the children at the Orphanage who in most cases depend on the benevolence of philanthropists and the little intervention from government."
Mr. Abban said the Club will continue to support the activities of the home. "It is not going to be a nine-day wonder; we will continue to assist in whichever form the club deems fit to help the administration of the Home."
Madam Emma Boafo Yeboah, founder of the CountrySide Orphanage receiving the items on behalf of the Home called on Ghanaians to support the institution in order to live up to its intended mission.
She said, "financing has been our major challenge...there are times I go out uninvited to look for companies to come and help in running the home."
Madam Boafo Yeboah said, "we do not have stable sponsors to assist us in the day- to-day administration of the home, the salaries of our teachers have not yet been paid.."
The CountrySide Orphanage currently houses over 137 children apart from toddlers.
Madam Boafo Yeboah thanked the members of the Builders Club for their donation. She appealed to companies, individuals, philanthropists, churches and other institutions to assist the home.
The Builder's Club is a non-governmental, non-partisan and a non-denominational organization founded in 2000 among other things to help build orphanages, care for the aged and the less previleged with its internally generated resources.
