Congo-Kinshasa: South Kivu - Humanitarian Agencies Mobilise to Assist Displaced People At Minova

Due to the armed conflict in North Kivu province between the Armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC) and rebels of the National Congress for the Defence of People (CNDP), some 6,000 people have found shelter in the town of Minova in Kalehe territory some 150 kilometres north of Bukavu, capital of the neighbouring South Kivu province.

These newly internally displaced people (IDP's) are in need of emergency aid, it is reported.

Humanitarian agencies organised, on 21 november 2008, the delivery of food and non-food assistance to the area. Several international non-governmental organizations left Bukavu this morning heading to Minova. Most of these 6,000 displaced people there have arrived from Bukavu, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Currently, aid is being organised along the Kalungu-Minova road where an additional 6,200 displaced families have found refuge in the last few months, due to fighting in North Kivu. The displaced are living either in camps or with host families.

This intervention is not only about supplying them with food products from the World Food Programme (WFP) which hopes to cover their needs for three months. They are also being provided with non-food aid consisting of kitchen utensils, blankets, sheets and soap. Clean water and sanitation supplies will also be delivered.
