Angola: Changes to Transports to Dignify Country - Minister

22 November 2008

Luanda — The changes and improvements that will be made to the transports sector, through its restructuring process, aim at a boost and more dignity to the country in this particular segment of the country's economic sphere.

This was said Friday in Luanda by the Transport minister, Augusto Tomás, while addressing a dinner on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of the Transport Ministry.

According to the minister, transports represent a factor of social and economic development of any country, hence the importance in the implementation of actions to rescue it from lethargy.

"The actual situation is known. There is still a lot of work ahead, as we all need to join synergies to free the sector from the present lethargy it is in, marked by negative points as it is seen in the air segment. The maritime, railway and road sectors, also need a blow of fresh air," said the minister.

To him, development can not be achieved without a well structured transport sector.

He spoke of the need for the public companies of transport to be capable of responding to the needs of the citizens and become an added value to the economy, through the supply of good and efficient services that yield positive results.

The Government early this month announced the re-foundation the state-owned carrier TAAG-EP, under a process that includes the re-designing of the company and its migration plans, financially sustainable and based on a high quality service.

The measure taken by the Council of Ministers follows the situation facing the company that includes its black-listing and ban from the European airspace.

The measure included the appointment of a commission to run the company.

Among its responsibilities, the commission will secure the continuity of Taag-EP activity and tasks assigned from above.

The management that will be under the minister of Transports, Augusto Tomás, is among other matters, tasked with drafting an organisational strategy for the new State-run air carrier.
