Uganda: Ochora Directs Gulu Mayor on Road Funds

Kampala — GULU municipal authorities should look for an alternative road to tarmac with the sh400m that they have raised, instead of wasting it on Lacor Road, the Resident District Commissioner has said.

Walter Ochora said: "There is a lot of work in the municipal council which the sh400m can do as we wait for the comprehensive programme of tarmacking the road in 2010."

Let the mayor embark on garbage collection because the town is very dirty. Let them work on other bad roads like Upper Churchill Drive in Senior Quarters, which is in very bad condition," Ochora told journalists at his office last Tuesday.

Asked what he would do if the mayor insisted on working on Lacor Road, he said: "The mayor cannot continue with the work because the person who is supposed to do the work is a government contractor. We shall tell him not to carry on with the work".

He said the Government had earmarked sh5.6b to tarmac the Gulu-Sudan road, whose work begins in 2010.

He said: "We just need good murram for that road."
