Tanzania: Arusha Residents Happy With Free Medical Check-Up

Arusha — More than 100 residents of Arusha including members of the Arusha Wazee Sports Club last Saturday received free medical checkups from the Dar es Salaam - based Afya Sports Club doctors at the General Tyre Sports grounds along Njiro road.

The exercise included check-ups on Diabetics, Blood Pressure and BMI with those who required prescriptions being advised to source medicine from MMT Pharmacy and St Thomas Hospital in town at special discounted rates.

Launching the exercise the Arusha District Commissioner Mr Evans Balama commended the move saying it was important in the promotion of 'sporting with a purpose' spirit. He said the more the than 30 doctors who were in Arusha to play a football match against the Wazee Club were setting a good example in taking time to provide free medical assistance to Arusha residents.

The Wazee Club Chairman Mr. Danford Mpumilwa said the two Clubs are planning to make the project an annual event which would also involve checkups of more diseases beginning next year.

The Afya Club Secretary General Dr. Godfather Kimaro promised full cooperation in the project and commended companies which had come forward to sponsor the trip including Vodacom Tanzania Ltd. Other companies who assisted in the project were Tanzania Breweries Ltd. MMT Pharmacy and St. Thomas Hospital.

Later in the afternoon the Doctors went on to prove their physical fitness by defeating the gallant Wazees 3-2 in a thrilling football match at the same grounds.

In the evening the visitors and their hosts were treated to drinks and 'nyama choma' at the Carnival Matonge Club at Nane Nane grounds where the guest of honour Mr. Vincent Mrisho, the Principal Secretary in the Prime Minister's office also commended the cooperation and urged other clubs in the country and of other professions to emulate this 'service to the community' project.
