Sierra Leone: Amputees to Play for Peace

The Sierra Leone Amputee national team would join Ghana and Liberia in a peace football gala to be staged in Ghana.

The planned gala would be organized by the Ghanaian National Paralympics Committee (NPC) in order to add their voice to the call for a peaceful atmosphere during the country's next general elections slated for next month.

According to NPC, the gala is expected to kick-off before the December 7 polls and will pitch the Ghanaian Amputee football team against their counterparts from Liberia and Sierra Leone.

NPC Technical Director, Armstrong Aidoo revealed to GNA Sports that both countries have confirmed their participation in the gala, which he described as the contribution of the physically challenged towards an incident-free election.

He said the initiative was proposed by the two countries who have been victims of civil unrest over the past years. "Liberia and Sierra Leone have suffered from political instability in the past and this has led to many of the citizens being incapacitated.

"Most of the members of the Amputee team of the countries became paralysed due to the political instability." Aidoo said, adding that members of the team will share their experiences with soccer loving Ghanaians and would stress on the need for a peaceful violence free elections come next month.

Aidoo who doubles as the secretary general of the Amputee Football Federation of Africa (AFFA) said they are also planning to get all the seven Presidential aspirants of the various political parties to grace the event on Nov. 21 08.
