Unidentified bandits, Tuesday 11, broke into the house of UPC Littoral Provincial Coordinator, Adolph Papy Ndoumbe, at about 3 am and beat him up.Ndoumbe is currently receiving treatment at the Military Hospital in Douala.
The victim said he had to skip over his 10-metre high fence to escape from the bandits when they broke in.Doctors said he sustained serious injuries on his ankle.
According to Mrs. Ndoumbe, some FCFA 1.3 million, telephones and jewellery worth millions were stolen.
She said some documents containing important information relating to voting during the controversial Douala V re-runs, and those pertaining to fraud observed during the elections were also stolen.
Mrs. Ndoumbe said her husband had just returned home after participating in the elections that saw Francoise Foning emerge as Mayor of Douala V, when they suddenly heard a bang on the door.
She said when the thieves broke in, they used their young daughter as a guide round the house. She said two men, unmasked, searched the rooms, while two others waited outside.
One of the thieves is quoted to have, after laying hands on the election documents, said "we have found what we wanted" and then left.
Elements of the 10th Police District in Douala are still carrying on investigations. It is unclear whether the break-in was politically motivated, but Ndoumbe in his sick bed said the problems of insecurity should be taken seriously in Douala, especially when "irresponsible" people are confirmed to be mayors.
