Namibia: Chief Santos Push Stars All the Way

24 November 2008

AFRICAN Stars had to pull out all the stops before beating Chief Santos 3-2 at a packed Khomasdal Stadium in a MTC Namibia Premier League match on Saturday.

Stars dominated possession in the first half and after missing numerous chances, captain Andrew Tjahikika scored the opening goal when he stabbed in a freekick at the far post.

Santos attacked more in the second half but their cause was not helped when Simon Ouseb was red carded for stamping on a player on 67 minutes and barely three minutes later Stars went further ahead when a long cross by Dennis Ngueza floated into the net.

Chief Santos however immediately struck back when Nelson Geingob volleyed in a centre a minute later and then showed great character by taking the game to Stars.

Santos captain Alfred 'Affy' Ndjenge put in some strong runs and their pressure paid off on 85m when they won a penalty after Esegiel Tjozongoro handled in the box.

Ndjenge scored from the spot kick but was ordered to retake it after Chief Santos' players had encroached the ball.

Ndjenge however calmly scored again to make the score 2-all.

Chief Santos' celebrations were short-lived as an unmarked Litombo headed in Stars' winner with two minutes remaining.

Orlando Pirates and Eleven Arrows drew 0-all in a dull affair as both sides employed safety-first tactics and chances were few and far between also on Saturday at the same venue.

Ramblers' woes continued as they lost 2-0 at home to Black Africa at the Ramblers Stadium.

Jerome Louis scored both BA's goals, heading in a cross in the first half and then hitting the back of the net with a classic header from a corner with 10 minutes remaining.

In Oshakati, Civics grabbed an important 1-0 away win against Oshakati City, with recalled Victor Helu scoring the winner at the Oshakati Independence Stadium on Saturday.

Tigers also grabbed an away win, beating Mighty Gunners 3-1 at Otjiwarongo's Mokati Stadium.

Cymot SKW went to the top of the log after a brace by midfielder Warren Neidel gave them a 2-0 victory against Hotspurs on Friday night at the SKW Stadium.

Neidel could have got a third when he broke clear in the final minutes, but Hotspurs' keeper brought off a great save at his feet.

SKW took the lead when Tjono Jagger raced clear on the right wing and sent in a perfect cross for Neidel to volley home.

SKW continued to surge forward and soon extended their lead.

This time it was Danny Chilufya who sent a cross from the right and once again Neidel was free in the box to slam the ball into the net.
