Cameroon: Pastors' Prayers Fail to Resurrect Limbe SG

Francis Tim Mbom

23 November 2008

A college of Pentecostal pastors tried in vain to resurrect the Secretary General of the Limbe Council, John Moleli Luma, who died abruptly Monday, November 17. Even after doctors at the Limbe Provincial Hospital stated that the SG was clinically dead, the pastor believed that a miracle would bring him back to life.

Moleli reportedly suffered from a sudden malaise in his house by 5:30 am and was ferried to the Limbe Provincial Hospital by family members at about 6:00 am. A battery of doctors, some from the SONARA medical unit are said to have been rallied to reanimate the SG. The doctors, according to witnesses, found out that the man had already died.

After the doctors declared the man dead, a college of pastors in Limbe decided to test the power of their faith and do to the SG what Christ did to his friend Lazarus in the Bible.

The body of the SG was carried to the mourners' hall and laid besides the Hospital Mortuary where a frenzied prayer session then ensued.

In spite of pleas by the Senior Divisional Officer for Fako, Jules Djaga Marcel, that the corpse of the deceased SG be taken to the mortuary for preservation, the pastors and family members remained adamant, believing that a miracle would occur. After hours of prayers, the family members conveyed the body back to the SG's Down Beach residence where the 'resurrection' prayer session continued.

It was only at about 2:00 pm when the pastors could not bring back the man to life that his body was finally transferred to Buea Hospital Mortuary for preservation.

SG's Sudden Death

Before he suffered from the malaise leading to his untimely death, Moleli is said to have been in good health. He also reportedly emceed a marriage feast the day before at Chief Henry Njalla Quan's Mbonjo Palace.

A Council driver told The Post that on Sunday November 16, he and Moleli worked together, clearing up the chairs and other things used for the nuptial party.According to family sources, Moleli went to bed on Sunday fine and got out of bed as early as 5:00 am on Monday, as usual. He is said to have watched TV before he suddenly slumped off.

Moleli, about 40, had been working with the Limbe Council since 1998. He served briefly under the reign of Njalla Quan when he was Government Delegate of the Council. When Lifanda took over, Moleli served first as Chief of Cabinet and later on was promoted to the rank of Assistant SG. The Government finally confirmed him as full SG.

With the creation of Limbe as a city country, he was appointed pioneer SG of the Limbe City Council. The Post gathered that his installation as SG had already been scheduled for the near future.
