Nigeria: EFCC Verifies List of FG Contractors

Abuja — Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun verification of the list of contractors working with the Federal Government to determine their authenticity.

Spokesman of the anti-graft agency, Femi Babafemi, fielding questions on the matter, said contrary to speculations that the commission had shelved the verification exercise due to mounting pressure, it had indeed sent out letters to all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to furnish it with the list of contractors they deal with.

According to him, majority of the MDAs written to have complied with the directive and submitted their lists to the commission.

He, however, added that a few others have asked for a little more time to put their acts together, a prayer which the EFCC granted.

"We are working on the list submitted to us so far while we await the submission from the remaining agencies," he stated.

He added: "The EFCC is verifying the list. Right now, operatives are checking with Corporate Affairs Commission to establish the legal status of those companies."

EFCC had on August 11 begun the compilation of a list of contractors working with federal ministries and parastatals with a view to keeping a tab on them.

The commission then requested all the federal ministries and parastatals to furnish it with the list of registered contractors as well as all contracts awarded in the last four years.

It also sought to know the cost of contracts awarded to all the contractors, status of the contracts, and all other information that would be relevant for the purpose of the exercise.
