South Africa: Diski 5 Final Set for Mandela Square

Thrilling Diski 5 GP skill and flair had the crowd on the edge of their seats at Mandela Square in Sandton on Friday, as Sedibeng-based Madagascar and The Gunners from Johannesburg got the goals that counted in order to book their places for Sunday's final.

Soccer fans were treated to five hours of soccer entertainment played on the 30 metres x 12 metres, fast paced surface, in the popular 5-a-side tournament run under the auspices of the Gauteng Provincial Government, who are the hosts of the world's premier soccer exhibition, Soccerex, which takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre from November 23-26.

Both on and off the playing area, Madagascar showed character and spirit and their 5-4 triumph over West Rand-based Sweepers, was arguably the game of the day, after the Sedibeng side overcame a 4-0 deficit to win.

Sunday's men's final (15h15 kickoff), will be preceded b y the women's showpiece title decider to be contested between Johannesburg side Golden Girls and Tshwane's Halleluya Angels (15h00 kickoff).

Friday's matches were played on a round robin basis with the top two sides in the respective competitions having qualified to compete in the showpiece finals on Sunday. The ultimate champions of the boys and ladies competitions, will each receive shopping vouchers and a chance to be coached for an afternoon by leading trainers from the David Beckham Academy in SA.

Gauteng MEC: Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Ms Barbara Creecy said: "The chance to strive for soccer success on the internationally renowned Mandela Square in Sandton on Sunday is certain to take the motivation and skills levels of the players to even greater heights, and I am confident that the soccer action will be one of the highlights of the Gauteng Provincial Government's hosting of Soccerex in Johannesburg for the second consecutive year.

"The Gauteng Province is known in sporting circles as 'the Home of Champions' and I am sure that the level of soccer on display will give our influx of Soccerex-bound international visitors a healthy indication of our country's passion for soccer ahead of the FIFA 2009 Confederations Cup and FIFA 2010 World Cup, both to be held in SA," added Ms Creecy.
