South Africa: Local Favourites Clinch Diski 5 Titles

Sandton's Mandela Square was a scene of goals galore as Sedibeng-based Madagascar and local favourites Golden Girls, were crowned as the men's and women's Diski 5 Gauteng Province champions respectively.

The Diski 5 Gauteng Province soccer action took place in the SAFA Gauteng regions based on an elimination process which saw the final two phases of matches brought to the Mandela Square, as part of the Gauteng Provincial Government's preparations for the hosting of the world's premier soccer exhibition, Soccerex, at the Sandton Convention Centre from November 23-26.

The Madagascar 'green-machine' that dominated the playoff stages on Friday, were involved in an epic challenge for the title as they played to a 5-all draw with The Gunners, before holding their nerve to win a tense penalty shoot-out 5-4 in front of a large crowd at Mandela Square.

During regulation time, Pikoko Xaba (3), Thulani Bucibo and Thabang Sekubala scored for Madagascar while Xolisani Gxowa netted four times, with Siyabonga Nkomo completing the scoring for the eventual runners-up.

In the women's open section final, it was one-way traffic to the trophy for the Golden Girls as they crushed Halleluya Angels 6-1. The hosts found the 30 metres x 12 metres speedy playing surface to their liking and Kgadi Mokoma collected three goals, with Gugu Gabuza, Mampa Tlhwaele and Sisebo Mokgopa completing the scoring. Nhlanhla Keitumetse scored a consolation goal for the team from Tshwane.

The players from the winning teams each received shopping vouchers and a chance to be coached for an afternoon by leading trainers from the David Beckham Academy in SA.

After handing over the trophies and medals to the players of the winning teams, Gauteng MEC: Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Ms Barbara Creecy said: "The passion and skill shown during the Diski 5 Gauteng Province campaign is indicative of the soccer talent that exists in our province, and I trust that the players who participate in this exciting tournament, will use the experience gained as a platform to go on to greater levels in the Beautiful Game, as well as being able to become sports role models to the youth in their communities."

"On the eve of the Gauteng Provincial Government's hosting of Soccerex for the second consecutive year, we look forward to welcoming many visitors from abroad or other areas of our country, to our soccer-crazy province that abides by the slogan of being 'the Home of Competitive Sport and the Home of Champions'," said Ms Creecy.
