South Africa: Cosafa Scam Probe Extended

24 November 2008

Pretoria police investigating the disappearance of funds from the Cosafa Senior Challenge that was hosted by South Africa earlier this year, have extended their investigations to a number of stadiums in the Mpumalanga province.

The police probe follows the arrest of four people at the Nelson Mandela Challenge last week.

The four were all members of Safa's security personnel, however, their detention is in no way linked to the South African controlling body.

A Cosafa official told KickOff.com this morning that they have no indication as to how much money is involved and that the scam was brought to their attention by a security company they employed during the African regional competition.

This, in turn, led to police swooping on the Olympia Park on Wednesday night and arresting the four men.

The Cosafa competition, that was staged during August used the Puma Stadium, Witbank; Lilian Ngoyi Stadium, Secunda as well as Thulamahashe Stadium for the semi-finals and finals of the competition.

It has not been established yet whether the four men that were detained are still in custody. They would have appeared in court for formal remand in view of the on-going investigations, or have been granted bail.
