Ghana: GBS Kicks Off Action

24 November 2008

Gateway Broadcasting System will get their coverage of the Ghana Premier League off this season with the Monday night game between Accra Hearts of Oak and Saint Mirren.

The satellite TV Company gave the Ghana game a major lift and much needed international exposure when they screened some of the biggest games of last season's campaign across some African country and are promising to go big on the current campaign.

Without a title sponsor, the money from the television deal is the only one the clubs can count on but Professional league Board chairman Welbeck Abrah-Appiah says the biggest benefit from the deal is the international exposure it provides the league.

"The entry of GBS as the official broadcast partner of the Ghana Premier League has raised the standards of the league as it is now viewed by millions of people across Africa," said Welbeck Abra-Appiah, PLB chairman.

"This is the best way to display our football skills to the world and prove to all that Ghana is indeed the leading football giant in Africa."

GBS will have exclusive rights to live games but the PLB is hoping it can work out a deal that will allow regular highlights on local television, something which did not happen last season. GBS is hoping it can provide great mileage for the local game and boost interest in an era when the local game has taken a nosedive in the face of increasing competition from other leagues.

"Enhancing the game in Ghana is at the heart of this new partnership. GBS will continue to work with the GFA and its member clubs to accelerate the development of the standards, media appeal, commercial value and popularity of the sport," said GBS General Manager Michael Yamson said.
